Traditional Indian Crispy Fry Bread

★Ingredients

1½ teaspoon baking powder

1 cup all-purpose flour

½ cup plus 2 tablespoons milk

Vegetable oil (for frying)

¼ teaspoon salt

★Instructions

Prepare the Dough* Mix flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Add milk and stir until the dough forms a ball. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface without overworking it. Chill the dough for 30 minutes.

Heat the Oil* Heat oil in a deep frying pan or kettle to 350°F. Make sure there’s at least one inch of oil in the pan.

Shape the Dough* Divide the dough into four equal parts. Roll out each piece to ¼ inch thick and poke a hole in the center to ensure even frying.

Fry the Bread* Fry each dough disc until golden brown, about 3 minutes total. Flip halfway through.

Serve* Drain on paper towels and serve with your preferred toppings or use for Navajo tacos.
