square apple pie

★Ingredients

8 cups apples, peeled and sliced (Granny Smith or your favorite baking apple)

2 refrigerated pie crusts (or homemade if you prefer)

1/2 cup light brown sugar

1 cup granulated sugar

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon cornstarch

2 tablespoons lemon juice

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small cubes

1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Powdered sugar or a glaze (optional)

For the Glaze (optional):

1 cup powdered sugar

2 tablespoons milk

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

★Instructions

  • Prepare the Crust:

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

Roll out one of the pie crusts and fit it into a greased rectangular baking sheet (about 10×15 inches). Trim the edges to fit neatly into the pan.

  • Prepare the Filling:

In a large mixing bowl, combine the apple slices with granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, lemon juice, and cornstarch. Stir well until the apples are evenly coated.

  • Assemble the Pie:

Pour the apple mixture onto the prepared crust, spreading it out evenly.

Dot the apples with small pieces of butter.

Roll out the second pie crust and place it over the apples. Pinch the edges of the bottom and top crusts together to seal the pie. Cut slits in the top to allow steam to escape.

  • Bake the Pie:

Brush the top of the pie with the beaten egg to give it a golden finish.

Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.

  • Add Glaze (Optional):

While the pie is cooling, mix the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract to make the glaze.

Drizzle the glaze over the cooled pie for an extra touch of sweetness.

  • Serve:

Once the pie has cooled, cut it into squares and serve. Enjoy with ice cream or whipped cream if desired!

This recipe is a great option for serving a crowd or enjoying as a dessert for gatherings!
