How to prepare homemade sponge cake


  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) milk
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract


  • Preheat the Oven*
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour an 8-inch round cake pan.
  • Prepare the Dry Ingredients*
  • In a bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  • Beat the Eggs*
  • In a large mixing bowl, beat the eggs using an electric mixer on high speed until thick and pale (about 5-7 minutes).
  • Add Sugar*
  • Gradually add the sugar to the eggs, beating continuously until the mixture is light and fluffy.
  • Incorporate the Dry Ingredients*
  • Gently fold the dry ingredients into the egg mixture in three parts, using a spatula. Be careful not to deflate the batter.
  • Add Milk and Vanilla*
  • Warm the milk slightly and mix in the vanilla extract. Gently fold the milk mixture into the batter until just combined.
  • Bake the Cake*
  • Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan. Smooth the top with a spatula.
  • Bake*
  • Bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Cool the Cake*
  • Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn it out onto a wire rack to cool completely.


  • Make sure all ingredients are at room temperature before starting.

  • You can flavor the sponge cake by adding lemon zest, almond extract, or other flavorings to the batter.
